Description

A tricky one, but I am living proof you can.

How do we stay positive if our environment is negative and we can't just leave? We may live in a complicated situation where there are external forces we cannot control, for example: a teenager whose parents have mental health problems and abuse alcohol and substances, a broken marriage, redundancy, court, illness, grief, bullying etc. In my case, it was Domestic Abuse.

Whatever you are experiencing now is not going to last forever. You must keep reminding yourself there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Sometimes this light is a flicker because it is far away. Sometimes the light is big and bright because you are coming to the end of this phase. It's OK if you cannot run towards the light and need to take it as a crawling walk. Just take one step at a time and in the right direction. It took me two months to leave the abusive relationship and ten months to sell my home, as my former partner was incredibly obstructive. I felt like it was never going to end, but I kept reminding myself that everything has an ending. Nothing lasts forever. So when times are tough, the only thing you can do is get tougher.

Tough times never last, but tough people do.”

Dr Robert Schuller (1926 – 2015)

Finding other people whose light shines brightly will help you through the darkness and the chaos. Find people who inspire you to keep going, and they will help keep you on the right track. Everyone has a story to tell, and you can listen to this in an audio version, books, videos, blogs, and the list goes on. My inspirations are Bob Proctor, Bessel Van Der Kolk, Price Pritchett, Rhonda Byrne, Joseph Murphy, Caroline Sanderson, Jax Robinson, Berenice Tan, Lisa Nichols, Napoleon Hill, and Matthias J Barker. Whoever it is, study them, their work, and how they overcame difficult situations.

It is important to remember that when you feel like a victim or trapped and have no choice, you still have a choice. How we respond to our emotions and how we respond to our environment is our freedom alone. Journalling helps you can see the situation clearly. When we have everything whirling around in our heads, it can feel “big” and overwhelming. You can see everything from a different perspective when you write things out on paper. I found this helpful as I felt I had no one to talk to then. Journalling, for me, was like talking to a best friend.
