HIGHLIGHTS:
- Career Goals: As a child, Sabrina fell in line with what her family wanted her to be which was an attorney. It wasn't until her internship in her senior year that she discovered her interest in the nonprofit space.
- Family Support: Her parents had a limited education background and they were devastated when she told them she wasn't going to law school. She explained her detailed plans to them and they shifted to supporting her goals...even though they weren't quite clear on what lied ahead for her.
- Military Career: Sabrina shared her story about "running away from home" and joining the US Army, which eventually covered the full cost of her education - undergrad and grad school.
- Education Journey: She earned college credit instead of monetary compensation for her internship. It exposed her to the legal community.
Her advice to college students: take an internship to build your network, clarify your career path, and learn critical soft skills. It's not just about the degree. - Mentorship: As she grew up, she was exposed to those in the military...not necessarily those who went to college. She naturally followed that path of those informal mentors in her community. Her first boss mentored her and it had a huge impact in her success. Sabrina mentors one person per year.
