History is not something that’s widely taught in schools today.
In his book “Bench and Book” Australian novelist, poet, short story writer and retired Western Australian Supreme Court judge, Nicholas Hasluck, has published some of his diary notes for the years 2000 and 2001. Important years in our history. He attended a conference in Canberra, called Challenging History. Melbourne historian. Stuart McIntyre told the Conference that the study of history was rapidly declining. In NSW in 1984 34% of high school students studied history. In 1995 that had fallen to 18%. In Victoria the story was far worse. It was 26% in 1984 but down to staggeringly low 6.5% in 1995.
So no history. Is that a good thing or a bad thing?
