A ninth major winter storm has brought snow, rain, and flooding to California. Travel is discouraged, avalanche warnings have been issued, and 20 storm-related deaths have occurred. Six people— including a 17-year-old mother and her 6-month-old baby— were killed in a shooting in Goshen, CA. authorities are searching for two suspects, and believe the killings were not random. The victims include the young mother and her baby, her father's uncle, her father's cousin, and her grandmother and great-grandmother.
A failed Republican candidate who authorities said was angry over his defeat and made baseless claims the election last November was “rigged” against him was arrested in connection with a series of drive-by shootings targeting the homes of Democratic lawmakers in New Mexico. Solomon Pena was arrested Monday night, with four other men conspiring with him in the shootings, which were allegedly politically motivated. No one was injured in th shootings, but police identified Pena as their key suspect using a combination of cellphone and vehicle recors, witness interviews, and bullet casings collected at the lawmakers’ homes. The New Mexico Republican Party condemned Pena, and additional arrests and charges are expected.

New Mexico's Attorney General Raúl Torrez wants to focus on the civil rights of children by providing them wit legal representation, in order to combat adverse childhood experiences that often result in youth ending up i the criminal justice system. He aims to discuss the issue with lawmakers and the governor in hopes of creatin a special unit within the Attorney General's office. Advocates are excited by the potential for child welfarereform, as New Mexico ranks worst in the U.S. in factors of child well-being. Last year, lawmakers approved a easure creating a new office that would provide legal representation for certain children, but a bill that woud have created an ombudsman oversight position stalled in the Senate. Torrez believes people are ready for chage.
