The great confession of Peter’s faith or how A.B. Bruce describes it, current opinion vs. eternal truth. Jesus in a moment of private teaching asks a question, “who do people say that I am?” and “who do you say that I am?” Jesus wants them to profess their own faith. We look this week at the people that the disciples name off; Jeremiah, Elijah, Ezekiel, Daniel, John the Baptiste, etc.… and how these names would have been a great honor to be compared to. Jesus however is not satisfied with the response; he was looking for something more divine in nature. Jesus then asks his disciples what they say, and Peter has the famous response “you are the Christ the son of the living God.” Jesus is satisfied with this response and tells us that it is on this faith that he will build his church. Peter’s response gives us two truths that A.B. Bruce points out that Jesus is the Messiah and Jesus is Divine.
