Seemingly small almost insignificant events can lead to greatness and that is the case of the church and the beginning of Jesus’ ministry. In John 1, John the Baptiste says “Behold the Lamb of God…” and five men from nowhere are introduced to Jesus. They gather around the feet of Jesus because there is something different about his teaching. These men were tired of the religion that was in fashion at the time, a religion that was based on works and that was seemingly shallow. They truly hungered and thirsted for real righteousness, and they found Jesus. A.B. Bruce spends time in this first chapter introducing these 5 men that were among the first of Jesus’s apostles and what we can learn from these small beginnings, and of course Jesus says you will see greater things than these and he was right.
