We look today at chapter 6 of A.B. Bruce’s book and what we can learn from the request that the apostles asked Jesus "Teach us to pray." The apostles got to witness Jesus pray in public and in private and they noticed something special about that relationship that they wanted the same for themselves. Jesus responds to their request with what we call the “Lord’s Prayer” and what A.B. Bruce refers to as the ABCs of prayer. Our prayer life requires us to be patient and persistent and sometimes we lack the words to say but the far greater problem is to lack the faith in our prayer life. Jesus uses two parables to explain this lack of faith on our part. In our prayer life the possible answers are yes, no, and wait, and through his teaching on prayer he wanted to inspire hope in God even in the darkest hours of our life. We pray and hope in God because Jesus tells us to in his inspiring words “Ask and you will receive.”
