Hello Creatives,
The haunting narrative of "Carmilla" deepens as we venture into Chapter 2 of Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu's gothic masterpiece.
Following our introduction to young Laura and her disturbing nighttime visitation, we now witness the arrival of a mysterious stranger who will forever alter the quiet existence at the isolated Styrian castle.
Our reading begins with Laura learning of the tragic death of Bertha Reinfeld, niece of General Spielsdorf, through a letter filled with grief and mysterious accusations.
The General's anguished words speak of betrayal, a monstrous fiend, and his vow to hunt down the creature responsible for his beloved ward's demise.
This foreboding correspondence casts a shadow over the moonlit evening that follows.
As Laura and her father walk the castle grounds, we're treated to Le Fanu's masterful atmospheric prose describing the enchanted moonlit landscape.
The governesses discuss folklore about the moon's supernatural influences—its effects on dreams, lunacy, and spiritual activity—creating the perfect gothic backdrop for what follows: a dramatic carriage accident that brings an unconscious young woman and her elegantly commanding mother to their doorstep.
The mother's behaviour raises immediate questions. Despite apparent concern for her daughter, she abandons the girl with surprising haste, speaking privately with Laura's father before departing on what she claims is an urgent three-month journey.
What secrets does this mysterious mother harbour? And who is this unconscious girl now left in the care of Laura's household?
For lovers of classic gothic horror, vampire literature, or atmospheric Victorian prose, this chapter reading provides a perfect entry point into Le Fanu's influential work.
Follow now to join us as the mysterious relationship between Laura and her unexpected guest unfolds in subsequent chapters.
