Nether character is a standout for the reader. Both are gray. By THE DARK GAMBIT, Angelique accepts her fate, but John still wants to avoid it. Yet, the reader will see as he begins to realize, he cannot avoid it. Does he have a choice?
The series does not have a happy ending—perhaps a positive one, but definitely not a happy one.
