Description

The text read for Baptism of the Lord Sunday was Mark 1:1-12. Rev. Mitchell Boone called attention to the reality that baptism is meant to be celebrated within the community - a celebration as a new member joins the community and we collectively affirm God's love present and at work in that individual. The irony, of course, being that worship took place online only and not being physically present to one another as we remember our baptism, challenges us in how we will be community to one another.

The beauty of remembering our baptism is whether or not we are physically together, we can continue to affirm the truth of our baptism - that we are all beloved children of God. Mitchell talked about the struggle to accept being accepted by God when we live in a culture that seeks continual affirmation. The desire for one more "like," one more "follow," one more "friend." Remembering our baptism is a way to affirm that God loves us regardless of what we do, rather simply because of who we are!
