To focus on the hearing aspect of communication, our studio guest this week is Speech-Language Therapist and Audiologist, Lisa Calligaro. Lisa is also an accomplished flautist and pianist, and she lives with type 1 diabetes.

• Whether audiologists should be part of the wider transdisciplinary care team to facilitate the management of
  diabetes
• The association of the preventable, potential problem of hearing loss with diabetes, and some of the possible mechanisms behind this
• The difference between the normal age-related loss of high frequency hearing and a possible loss of low frequency hearing in diabetes, and the predictive potential of this for risk of cardiovascular disease
• “Use it or lose it” - the importance of hearing and practicing listening in cognitive health and in the prevention of social withdrawal, loneliness, depression, cognitive decline and dementia
• Practical healthcare communication problems that can result from hearing loss
• The importance of early detection and treatment of hearing loss – is there a case for mandatory screening from age 50?
• Simple questions and formal audiology tests to screen for hearing loss in diabetes
• The effect of stigma in identifying and treating hearing loss
• Fantastic new technologies to treat hearing loss
