Our studio guest this week, First Officer Jonathan Collins, Boeing 737-800 Airline Pilot, Flight Operations Technical Writer and Diabetes Advocate epitomises this goal. In an inspiring discussion:

• We hear about Jonathan’s passion for flying which, like many other aspirant and qualified pilots, infused his life from a young age
• Jonathan relates his post-school qualification as a commercial airline pilot and ensuing role as a flight instructor
• He reflects on hitting the ‘turbulence’ of a diabetes diagnosis in February 2020, and his first steps on this new life journey. This included losing his ‘medical fitness to fly’ and his nearly one-year ‘evidence-based’ advocacy struggle to regain his ‘wings’, by working to align the relevant legislation in South Africa with international best-practice.
• We learn how Jonathan’s ongoing personal advocacy efforts are changing the lives of other aspirant or qualified South African pilots
• We realise how for many reasons, a pilot with type 1 diabetes may actually be a safer pilot - Jonathan describes the vital roles of modern technologies as ‘enablers’ in the legislative changes he facilitated, and how his Dexcom G6 continuous glucose monitoring system and his Tandem insulin pump help him achieve the set ‘time-in-range’ criteria which ensure passenger safety.
