Our first studio guest this week is Omy Naidoo, a Consultant Dietician and Director Omy Naidoo Inc, Director Newtricion Wellness Institute, Serial Entrepreneur, and Podcaster specialising in critical care nutrition. Omy discusses:

• Growing up in a family where diabetes related complications and deaths were commonplace, and his resultant anxieties about this
• Good adherence to medication in his family, but a lack of understanding how nutrition affected diabetes management and trajectory
• the need for individualisation of nutritional care approaches in diabetes, and within this, the vital role of culturally appropriate healthcare guidance
• The importance of nutritional guidance for diabetes from a diabetes-trained registered dietitian
• The concept of self-efficacy (a person’s confidence in their own ability to self-manage their health condition)
• The changing face of the profession of dietetics, but a remaining legacy of some dietitians (and other health professionals) who do not upskill themselves in specialist areas, or keep up with advances or changes in evidence and practice.
• The importance of consistency of care and messaging between various types of health professionals
• His podcast ‘Healthy Conversations with Omy Naidoo’ as an example of advanced knowledge and insight of a specialised registered dietitian beyond just a ‘diet’ or meal plan, and the importance of podcasting for dissemination of valuable information in an accessible way

Then, diabetes specialist pharmacist and person living with diabetes, Imraan Bismilla joins us to reflect on his recent Ramadan fast experience and his resultant profound learnings and insights. He also emphasizes the roles of continuous glucose monitoring and ‘time in range’ as enablers in his diabetes self-management.

We also introduce the next Sweet Life Diabetes Community Advocacy Message, “We really know a lot about our condition…”
