This week, Stan and Michael talk about the use of corticosteroid-based oral and injectable medications in the context of diabetes and how to gain the benefits of their use, when indicated, and avoid some of the possibly severe hyperglycaemic complications that may result.

Our studio guest is Jaco Ferreira, National Account Sales Manager for Get Stoked Distribution and Founder and Director of RevolutionFit. Jaco enigmatically describes himself as an entrepreneur and ‘Human Earth Experience Optimizer’. He is also an avid cyclist and cycling coach, and a 3-time Cape Epic (over 700 km and with 17,000 m of climbing) annual mountain bike stage race finisher. He also has type 1 diabetes… One word sums Jaco up… TOUGH!

Jaco recounts:

• The holistic concept behind his RevolutionFit business to prepare people for physically demanding feats
• His inspiring ‘rough and tumble’ Cape Epic experiences
• A potentially life- and business derailing event two and a half years ago during the COVID-19 pandemic – a disabling (mis-)diagnosis of type 2 diabetes weeks after getting married…
• Hooking up with now great-friend and fellow mountain biker Karel Jacobs who has had type 1 diabetes for 16 years, and through him getting a referral to the CDE where he received a correct diagnosis and appropriate care and education to support his physical activity needs.
• The dramatic benefits of starting insulin therapy for type 1 diabetes and of continuous glucose monitoring
• Clawing his way back to physical and mental health and race fitness after his diagnosis
• His desire to start ‘type 1 peloton’, a mountain biking team for people with type 1 diabetes to raise diabetes awareness and possibly raise funds for disadvantaged people with the condition.
• His thoughts on mental fitness in mountain biking, and the resources of clinical psychology sessions and a supportive race partner
• Adapting his race nutrition needs to diabetes
• Looking forward to competing again!
