Is it good to keep doing the same thing over and over again, or do we strike out on a new path?
Here’s Episode 91 of my podcast series taken from my 98th 15 Minutes for Accountants & Bookkeepers LinkedIn Live Show which aired on LinkedIn on 15th November 2023.
This week, I chatted with Cheryl Dunn who is a Professor and Director of the School of Accounting at Grand Valley State University. Michigan. USA
She is currently working with Dave McComb of Semantic Arts on a book titled The Data-Centric Accounting Revolution. So we tried to work out what it is and how it affects our traditional accounting of debits and credits that we’ve been doing for thousands of years.
It was a fascinating discussion and cool to be in at something from the ground.
Cheryl has spent her academic career teaching students how to design relational databases to store transactional data such that financial statements can be produced directly from the database.
No debits, credits, journals, or ledgers are needed, and financial reports can be produced for any time period, with no closing needed.
Dave and Cheryl are working to achieve those goals with semantic technology instead of relational databases and to make Accounting part of the Data-Centric Revolution. Semantic Arts is itself implementing Data-Centric Accounting as a proof of concept, after which they will finalize the book.
