Having spent 20 years working in the education and training sector, Helen’s world changed in 2012 when her mother was diagnosed with dementia.
Over the next few years, she immersed herself in the world of dementia care and meaningful activity and helped hundreds of care teams locally, regionally and nationally. However, Helen seldom told clients about the driving force behind her work. That changed in 2020 when she decided to write a book to help others.
A Duck Out of Water: Mum, dementia and care home life is Helen’s memoir about her mum’s experience and how it affected them both. She explains:
“When Mum was diagnosed, I read a lot about dementia and supporting a relative living with the disease, but most books stopped at the care home door. I wanted to give an honest account that explores the relationships, the challenges and how we navigated care home life together.”
Rita lived with dementia for ten years and sadly died in April 2021. However, Helen continues her work as an Activity and Wellbeing Specialist (Dementia Care), campaigner and author.
