Trigger Warning!!I
In today’s episode, I’m sharing my diet culture story. I have to confess that this is perhaps a heavy episode for anyone who has experienced sexual abuse and rape. I was not expecting to be vulnerable and share what I did. I hope that you can feel seen by my story and know that you are not alone.
I referenced feminist standpoint theory as an important framework to situate my lived experience as a site of production of knowledge and in challenging diet culture that far too long silenced my voice. My experiences matters. Your story matters. You matter.
In Borderlands/La Frontera, Gloria Anzaldúa, a Chicana feminist, theorized about la facultad, a deeper level of understanding that one can achieve by deep self-reflection and digging and unearthing below the surface. La facultad is a tool that individuals with marginalized identities can use to challenge oppressive narratives they have been brought up with and internalized. I used this concept as I shared my story and integrate it in my anti-diet work.
Equally important is the concept of nepantla, this in-between space of fluidity, contradiction, messiness, and ambiguity. I use nepantla in my story to describe how I navigated visibility and invisibility and made sense of the different forms of oppression and trauma I experienced as a child and teenager. I am a nepantlera who is constantly in between spaces, always in transition.
