I’m speaking with Alexandra and today’s conversation is about birth, but doesn’t involve her birth stories. We have a very compelling conversation about the work that Alexandra does in the world. We touch on:
*How Alexandra is a mother first, and a social scientist who has been doing her research on homebirth mothers, and Traditional Midwifery and it’s indigenous roots within Hawaii
* Alexandra is also a published author and has just recently finished her book, Back to the Womb - Reclaiming Birth Sovereignty, which is available for purchase and linked in the show notes
*She talks about her journey into doula work after having her first baby and what it was like giving her support to a mother birthing within the hospital system a few months after having her own home birth experience
*We get into how Alexandra choose her topic for dissertation — speaking about home birth mothers and Traditional Midwifery and why these women made the choices that they did
*We touch upon how Indigenous Hawaiian women have been systematically disconnected from their indigenous roots
*Alexandra speaks to the layers of trauma that the Indigenous Hawaiian women face while birthing within hospitals and some of the ways the Indigenous Midwives are trying to uphold their birthing traditions
*And we briefly touch on the importance of men in the birth space
