- - Summary: We have many projects, and many more on the horizon
Volunteering
- - As a volunteer nonprofit public charity organization, we have chosen to make all participants volunteers. There is no financial compensation for anyone in governance, nor any of the participants.
- - We do not want people to work for free. We do want to work with people willing to work for free.
- - When we began in 2022 we were having a Monthly Hackathon and an associated Project Focus.
- - For 2023, we are focusing on building a great cohort that can implement existing projects, and collaborate on the development of new projects.
- - We will focus intently on our CodeFor and CreateFor portals to resonate not only with the tech and coder crowd, but to be more inclusive of creative people who are not *coders* but who do want to take part, and to make it clear that not everything is code, and that the human factors that are typically associated with creativity are as important, sometimes moreso, than the code…
- - Our volunteer projects are a great way to not only Make our Smart City Smarter, but a great way to develop real job skills, add useful projects to a CV, and to work with peers and mentors (or mentees) to collaborate and cooperate with different people on different projects which one miight not encounter otherwise.
Hackathons
- - A classic hackathon that you may have heard of, is an all-nighter weekend of pizza and Red Bull and sometimes turning ideas into actual, tangible things.
- - We take a more casual approach to enable more participation (not everyone wants to stay awake for 48 hours or more) and to emphasize that our projects and volunteer time can move forward at any convenience, not **only** at the Hackathon itself.
- - Our hackathons are always about civic projects, community elevation, and collaboration between volunteers and our community at large. We do not pursue Sponsored Hackathons, which may focus on a particular product or project; this may lead to confusion, that we might be a hackathon-for-hire serivce, which we are not. So we might have a guest, like Wiliot for example for our February 2023 meetup, with hardware to play with and integrate into project ideas, but they are participating just like anyone else.
Projects
- - We have many projects. Too many to talk about today, but the projects we have announced and have started to specify (this is a collaborative process!) are a good start. We will talk about them more in later episodes.
