- Summary: Introduction to our Monthly Hackathons and our ongoing Projects
Hackathons
- We had a fun time with Wiliot visiting to try out their recently-released Innovation Kit, which enabled our participants to try out some IoT sensor technology hands-on! They found some early issues, which helped out the Wiliot team a lot, and we got to play with new stuff!
- Our hackathons are always aimed at learning and progressing through collaboration. Our Febuary 2023 Monthly Hackathon Meetup included our guests from Wiliot, but we always have our projects to work on and new projects to design, everything is fair game at all of our events.
- As always, our Hackathons are any-age-friendly, we like to see participation with as few barriers as possible.
- Our events are generally accessible, but we all need to pay attention to making that always more true.
Projects
- We have projects carried over from 2022, but really projects rarely actually end, so we have Projects.
- We will add more projects through 2023 and beyond, with collaboration from our volunteers!
- We are moving more dilberately into the Agile for Volunteers mode to encourage progress, accomplishment, and whole-team participation, starting NOW!
- We need to see actual commitment and participation, rather than the usual Vegas Ghost Protocol that we all know and do not love. Finishing projects will always be better than Starting projects, but unfortunately the popularity is reversed. Let us change that for 2023.
Talks
- Innovate for Vegas Foundation is in the process of starting talks.vegas to build the platform on which to place the people and their personalities on display for the world!
- We will tackle various formats, including Lightning and PechaKucha, but we can also roll our own!
- While this is beginning as an Innovate for Vegas project, we hope to include other local organizations (especially charities like ours) to drive the exposure of ideas and stories to inform, education, and entertain the world from right here in and around Las Vegas!
Other Stuff
- Our logo design continues to evolve, next up is some color (a few schemes in mind) and some additional hex tiles to reflect our CodeFor and CreateFor efforts.
- Our website re-launch will go along not only with our new logo, but also an initial roll-out of our cloud infrastructure, so we can deploy some ideas like the Startup Hotline without the tangled mess of allowing volunteers who do not commit to drive projects without a path to deployment… look for our new innovateforvegas.org site and the beginnings of deprecation of our old codeforvegas.org site.
- Our locality needs a better calendar. Our Smart Social project tackles this, it is the highest priority focus through March 2023.
- Did you know we are launching a Mastodon Server for the Las Vegas Area? Powered by Innovate for Vegas to maintain the deployment, an experiment in local communication and information sharing!
- Our Public Transit System is in need of help from people who use it, and who want to make it better. That is us! If you use RTC SNV services in any way, we need to talk!
- Anchor.fm and Spotify in general are okay, they can make it easier to distribute audio and lately video programs through their existing relationships and publishing pathways with Apple and Google and Amazon and others. Self-hosting as an authoritiative source is on the list, and then Anchor will be our secondary path to publication.
- We have a Discord server that is rarely used, seems like a great tool to include in our live stream productions of audio (and maybe video) so we can have more participation in productions like the one you are listening to!
