Show Notes
- - Host: Dan Hugo
- - Guest: Mary Norris
- - Summary: Mary has joined our Board of Directors to help us reach out beyond Nevada for civic volunteers looking to make a difference and to Innovate!
- - Produced with Ennuicastr at https://ecastr.com for free, as the Innovate for Vegas Foundation is a public charity AND a fellow developer and supporter of Open Source, Thanks Ennuicastr!
First things First, Brigades
- - What was a brigade?
- - The substantial change to the Code for America Brigade Program in early 2023
- - What comes next?
Going Big
- - The world is a big place
- - Las Vegas is a so-called Destination City, why not include civic volunteerism and innovation?
- - 40 Million Tourists visiting Vegas, a great opportunity to expose people to projects!
Broadly Applicable Projects
- - Local news, social interaction and discovery, public transit… these are not Vegas-only projects.
- - A focus on Open Data is nearly universal, should work for any locality
- - We have projects here, others have projects there, collaboration and cooperation are key!
- - Don´t forget the International Space Apps Challenge!
Participation in Vegas
- - Could be better… our Innovator Culture is nascent at best
- - Our name change to avoid Code for America AND be more inclusive of non-coders
- - Civic Volunteerism is simply not popular here when it comes to long-term projects
Coding, Creating, Winning
- - Non-code elements are as important, if not more so!
- - All projects, and participation, are essentially job skills development
- - Results will ideally be experienced thanks to people nearby using the tools, benefiting from the efforts!
- - People need to believe in deferred reward, not so common in Vegas…
