Show Notes
- Host: Dan Hugo
- Summary: Hacktoberfest 2023 is less than a month away and we intend to participate this year… along with facilitating the International Space Apps Challenge, the Congressional App Challenge, our local media project and its components, and a few other cool things. So what are you up to?
Hacktoberfest this year
- Last year we were still getting booted up, this year we have plenty to do
- As we reach out beyond Nevada for project collaboration and participation, we think this is a great way to introduce our efforts and meet others doing the same
- Ideally some of the people who tackle the Space Apps Challenge will have some energy left to check out what we have going on!
ISAC Update
- Our sign-up numbers are not great, but we have a month remaining to see what happens.
- The challenges are posted, the project submission scheme, judging, and prizes are going to be published, team formation begins 19 September in preparation for The Big Event!
- Our Hackathon Bootcamp on 23-24 September will be a great place to practice working with team mates and challenges and the all-night hackathon format, whether in-person or remotely (or both)
Congressional App Challenge
- Sign-ups are active now, the competition deadline is November 1, 2023 at 12pm Eastern Time.
- The best time to start is NOW, we will attempt to facilitate these efforts though this is a different type of event than ISAC
- At the end of the day, it is critical for the health of our nascent Innovation Culture in Greater Vegas, to recognize and celebrate innovation in this context and similar, enabling and encouraging participation at all levels by all comers!
Media and Challengers Projects
- Our My Muni project, which will include parts of Smart Social, Open Data Capture Platform, and probably vLocal at some point, will tackle modern tools and methods to make sharing information and general news about, for example, the Entrepreneurial Innovation Ecosystem, which does not get the coverage and exposure it needs to grow and succeed
- The Challengers project will make use of Smart Social and will focus on participants who take part in external challenges like International Space Apps Challenge, Congressional App Challenge, and various other local, national, and international competitive undertakings. This is a focus on the people, not the challenges, though clearly both will be elevated for more visibility, and maybe more participation…
Miscellaneous
- Official Entity Name Change filed with the Nevada Secretary of State, at long last
- Our Monthly Hackathon Meetups have come to an end, replaced for September with the Hackathon Bootcamp for the International Space Apps Challenge
- In order to participate in our ongoing civic volunteer projects, we will begin asking for experience contributing to open source or community projects in some form, including participation in the various Challenges we will encourage and support through the Challengers project.
