Description

“The All-Request Rock ’n’ Roll Jukebox,” hosted by Mike Saffran, on “99 BBF”/WBBF-FM (98.9), Rochester, N.Y. Originally aired 7 p.m.–Midnight Feb. 19, 2000.

Special notes: Audio quality is very poor, unfortunately, for roughly the second half of the show (after the cassette tape was flipped over at the 11:42 mark); also, effective with this show, there seems to no longer be a “two-punch” top-of-the-hour live ID.

Callers aired and other show highlights:

34 “Yeah, those Rochester girls aren’t too bad, either!” ;-)

54 Jim (“Knock Three Times”)

58 Kathy/Bloomfield (“American Pie” — dedication to daughter Lyssa)

25 “Big Ben”/Mendon (“Rock The Boat”)

02 “Beatle Brunch” with Joe Johnson reference

46 Unidentified male (“Spirit In The Sky”)

25 Scott/Rochester (“[We’re Gonna] Rock Around The Clock”)

46 “If it’s Saturday night, it’s ‘The Jukebox’ … and, yeah, if it’s Sunday, it’s ‘Meet The Press’ … or else, ’ya know, that’s what Buffalo’s Tim Russert would have you believe!” (a little play on words with the signature phrase that Russert — a western New York ‘favorite son’ — used to close every broadcast of the NBC News Sunday morning talk show “Meet The Press”)

01 Brian/Greece (“Have You Seen Her”)

56 References to “the storm that wasn’t,” which had “all the weather forecasters crying ‘wolf!’” (closing many schools) the day before (and that it probably was disappointing to most of them that we didn’t actually have a blizzard); and to someone (probably a transient announcer) on another local radio station “showing their ignorance” by admitting they had never before heard of the term “snow squall”!!

04 Ray/Penfield (“Magic Bus,” “Let’s Spend The Night Together” and “Jumpin’ Jack Flash”)

09 Jackie/Rochester (“Little Sister”)

42 Cassette tape ran out :-(

57 Dave/Pittsford (“Hot Rod Lincoln” — dedication to sons, William and Matthew)

12 Heather/Irondequoit (“I Fought The Law”)

47 Unidentified female/Greece (“Charlie Brown” — dedication to daughter Angela)

03 Reference to the passing, on Feb. 12, 2000 (a week earlier), of “Peanuts” creator, Charles Schulz

54 Bob (“Shout! Shout! Knock Yourself Out” — dedication to former 99 BBF DJ Tom Noonan on his birthday today)

34 Christina/Geneseo (“Peppermint Twist” — dedication to Rachel on her 25th birthday)

32 Joe/Dansville (“Draggin’ The Line”)

48 Peggy/Warsaw (“Brandy [You’re A Fine Girl]”)

21 Doug (“Nowhere Man”) — including reference to a piano, formerly belonging to John Lennon and that he used to compose “Imagine,” expected to fetch $2 million in an upcoming online auction

34 Mark/Brockport (“Him Or Me — What’s It Gonna Be”)

34 Bob (“Walking To New Orleans”)

05 Doug (“I Got A Line On You”)

57 Debbie/Lima (“Donna” — dedication to daughter Donna for her “after party” baby shower) — including reference to Fox TV show “Who Wants to Marry a Multi-Millionaire?” (which had aired Feb. 15, 2000)

56 Lenora/Chili (“Light My Fire”)

59 Ben/Rochester (“American Pie”) — including references to Madonna’s remake of “American Pie” and Pearl Jam’s remake of “Last Kiss” (Note: This is an extremely rare instance of playing the same requested song twice in a single night. I likely determined that a long enough amount of time had passed — close to five hours — since its first airing, in the 7 p.m. hour; plus, “American Pie,” due to its popularity, was likely one of few songs for which I would make the exception.)
