Description

New Year’s Day/“All-Request Weekend,” hosted by Mike Saffran, on “Oldies 98.9”/WKLX-FM (98.9), Rochester, N.Y. Originally aired 6 a.m.–Noon Jan. 1, 1996. (Bonus podcast episode)

Special note: Starting with this week’s podcast episode, we’re jumping ahead to Jan. 1, 1996 (a Monday — thus, technically, this isn’t a “Jukebox,” but show includes call-in requests as part of an “All-Request Weekend”); plus, returning to regular weekly posting — in celebration of the 30th anniversary of shows from calendar year 1996.

Callers aired and other show highlights:

00:10 Full “WKLX, Rochester” legal ID jingle

00:29 First of many references to “All-Request Weekend”

00:35 First of a few uses of “Crunch” SFX (Note: As elaborated in “Jukebox” show notes for July 31, 1999 [podcast episode posted on July 31, 2024], I occasionally used “crunch” sound effects typically with a lighthearted line such as, “Keep dancing [crunch] … I’ll play more!” (meaning we’ll never run out of great oldies to dance to). Its origin actually was the old Dorito’s TV commercial featuring Jay Leno saying, “Crunch all you want. We’ll make more.”

01:06 B. Forman Office Building reference

01:36 Tracy (“Sukiyaki”)

02:48 Saundra/Working at Frontier Long Distance (“Crystal Blue Persuasion”)

03:43 A little good-natured chiding of other Rochester radio stations for airing “canned” (prerecorded programming) on the holiday; and first of a few references to fellow WKLX DJs Tom Noonan and Johnny Angel (who, just for fun, Noonan and I sometimes called “John J. Angelowski Jr.” :-)

04:23 Becky (“Signs”)

04:43 Donna (“Lil’ Red Riding Hood” — dedication to Burt)

11:03 Unidentified female (“Living For The City”)

12:02 Todd/Working at Video Factory (Monroe and Goodman) (“Nowhere Man”)

15:51 Brenda/Greece (“American Pie”)

17:06 Tricia/Henrietta (“California Dreamin’”)

17:35 Unidentified female (“Honey”)

18:18 Borrowing Tom Noonan’s “spitting into spittoon” SFX by way of introducing him ;-)
