Description

“The All-Request Rock ’n’ Roll Jukebox,” hosted by Mike Saffran, on “99 BBF”/WBBF-FM (98.9), Rochester, N.Y. Originally aired 7 p.m.–Midnight Jan. 1, 2000.

Special note: For unknown reasons, the aircheck for this show begins, mid-sentence, with the mike break going into the approximately 7:22 p.m. commercial stopset; also, I get the overall sense that I was truly tired for this show — whether from having hosted an extra-long New Year’s Eve request show the prior night, partying afterwards or some other cause (I can hear it both in my voice and from the small handful of minor technical errors during the show — some of which might or night have have been caused by “operator error” — which was fairly uncommon).

Callers aired and other show highlights:

00:09 Mike break joined in progress with what sounds like an admonition related to purchasing high-priced IPO stocks (recall, this was around the time of the so-called “tech bubble”)

00:53 Dave/Rochester (“Please Please Me”)

01:30 Reference to fellow 99 BBF DJ Bobby Reed

01:58 Joe/Rochester (“Quarter To Three”)

02:25 Tom/Canandaigua (“Splish Splash”)

02:52 “’70s at 7,” with Chuck McCoy, plug

03:28 Cassette tape ran out :-(

03:45 Kathy/LeRoy (“Photograph”)

04:48 Dave/Rochester (“Suite: Judy Blue Eyes”)

05:33 Kathy/Greece (“Betcha By Golly, Wow”)

05:50 “Y2K” bug reference

07:23 Dick/Pike (“Oh, Pretty Woman” — dedication to Debbie working at Wegmans/Geneseo)

07:57 References to the host’s Christmas travels, the previous week, to North Carolina; to Companion Animal Hospital (Brighton) — where the host’s dog, Dutch, spent the holiday (and to his upcoming 11th birthday); to taking a rare holiday break from radio (including a partial break from listening to the radio); to how “generic” radio stations sound across the nation (for instance, many stations claiming to play “the most music” and “traffic and weather together”); and to the show’s Jukebox989@aol.com email address (including a tongue-in-cheek claim about an FCC regulation ;-)

09:34 Rita/Canandaigua (“Limbo Rock”)

10:33 “The most fun on the weekend!” — an intangible that you can feel (but that’s difficult to measure ;-)

11:18 “Who else would you trust with your great oldies — Rochester’s oldest FM radio station?”

11:28 Butch (“Vehicle” — dedication to Palmyra and Macedon listeners)

11:45 “Can I get a free Yellow Pages ad for ‘The Jukebox’?” ;-)

12:44 Lisa (“Spirit In The Sky”)

13:42 Dave/Rochester (“Magic Bus” — “DJ’s Choice”)

15:33 Jim/Brockport (“What Is Life”) — with references to the New Year’s Eve (Dec. 31, 1999) stabbing of Beatle (not “ex-Beatle”) George Harrison and to his wife hitting the intruder over the head with a lamp

17:36 Don/Rochester (10th Ward) (“Dirty Water”) — including references to the Genesee River, Cobb’s Hill Reservoir, Genesee Beer (and Genny Cream Ale) and to the company’s recent sale

19:28 Jim/Spencerport (“Needles And Pins”)

19:58 Mary (with husband, John)/Greece (“Walkin’ After Midnight” — dedication for their 30th wedding anniversary)

20:32 Jimmy/Irondequoit (“Look Through Any Window” — “DJ’s Choice”)

21:46 “Beatle Brunch” with Joe Johnson and “Fab Four at 4” plugs

22:28 Russ/Batavia (“Devil With A Blue Dress On/Good Golly Miss Molly”)

22:42 A likely “misfire”: “’70s at 7,” with Chuck McCoy, plug

22:59 Marianna/Rochester (“Having A Party” — dedication for her brother Bobby on his birthday (and to the host’s dog, Dutch, too, for his upcoming 11th birthday! :-)

23:45 References to one of then-Texas Gov. George W. Bush’s responses during a recent Republican presidential candidates debate; and to Atlanta Braves pitcher John Rocker’s recent comments published in a magazine interview (more: https://www.the-independent.com/incoming/braves-distance-themselves-from-pitcher-s-remarks-742231.html)

25:06 Jerry/Penfield (“Mustang Sally”)

26:02 Lenora (with dog Peanut) (“Happy Together”) — including another reference to Dutch! :-)

26:52 Technical difficulties? (A relatively rare technical problem with playback of a caller)

27:24 Mary (“Mrs. Robinson” — my guess is that the prior song, “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” was the caller’s actual request — but the phonier likely was edited after it didn’t play prior to the requested song)

28:34 Unidentified male (“Be-Bop-A-Lula”)
