How would you describe yourself? In some ways the way we answer that question tells us a lot about our identity. That is, how we see ourselves or what we see as valuable or significant about ourselves. In Phil 3, Paul has a whole list of things that used to be of great significance to him, but now he sees them as rubbish. Now he finds his identity in Jesus and strives to know Him more and more. This is helpful for us as, like Paul, we can have lists of things that we base our identity on, that aren't good, but rubbish. We too need to find our significance and meaning in Jesus.
