There's something special about New. When we have new shoes, a new car, New clothes, a new house, or a new job it's exciting and it gives us such joy and bounce in our steps. New is a good thing, and having new things is great, but what about our minds? In our text, Jesus, the greatest teacher of all times uses an analogy that is a great one...dealing with new wine going into old wineskins, the new and the old coming together for purpose.
Now, when new wine is being fermented, gases are released. A new wineskin is pliable and can withstand the expansion caused by the gases. There are things that God wants to do with us and in our lives, but because we have an old mindset, often we miss out because there's no expansion to be able to step into the new thing that he has for us...we are still thinking with an old mindset.
Putting new wine into an old wineskin, which is no longer pliable, is asking for trouble. The expansion of fermenting gases will stress it beyond its breaking point. Hence, there are times when we've prayed for certain things, and God wants to give them to us, but before he gives them to us, he has to change our mindset and give us a new mind because if he gives it to us with the mindset we have now, it will destroy us. In other words, the breaking point will cause the old wineskin to burst, and both wine and skin will be lost.
Jesus wants to give us new experiences, but it requires a new mindset. Let's change the way we think and how we see the situation, see God in it, and be renewed in our minds so that we can have new mindsets and experience the new that God has for us.
