Today’s Scripture:
Matthew 28:6 NIV
He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.
For many, Jesus's death on the cross was final. He himself said that it was finished. But he also told his disciples that in three days, he would restore the temple, speaking concerning his resurrection. The Bible tells us that Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to Jesus's tomb; upon arrival, they saw that the stone was rolled away, and an angel of the Lord appeared unto them. He said don't be afraid, or fear not. I know you are looking for Jesus who was crucified, he is not here, he is risen just as he said.
I want to pause here and remind us that whatever Jesus says to us and in his world shall be fulfilled. The angel said he is not here; he has risen just as he had said. Let's take Jesus at his word and know that what he says comes to fruition.
Many and the other Mary follow the angel based on his come-and-see command. There's something unique about this come and see because it is the very thing that our belief system is built on: the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Come and see for yourself, Peter. He is no longer dead, and he still wants you! He still loves you. Come and see, Thomas, who doubted the Lord and said unless I see the nail prints, I won't believe. After he saw them, he said, my Lord and my God! He did it for Thomas and for all his doubters out there, too. Come and see, this is Jesus Christ, the savior of the world.
You see, the resurrection is more than a thing we celebrate once a year; it is a come and see, it is for encounters with Christ. Jesus's resurrection brought about salvation for all. Come and see, it was the greatest day in history that there ever was or will be. Jesus is alive, come and see.
Come and see Saul, the killer of Christians, and be transformed into Paul, the great Church Father. Paul would turn the world upside down for Christ. The resurrection powered him. He said, oh, that I may know him in the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of his suffering. He understood that the resurrection brought power and that power came through suffering. Come and see! Power!
Lastly, come and see death; see that you no longer have power over us. The power and ring of death are no longer final. This Jesus says, behold, I am alive forever more. Because I live, you too shall live. Death come and sees that you have been defeated by the resurrected Lord.
Come and see, all you who are weak, weary, and scared. Jesus is calling. His resurrection is proof that you can have eternal life in him and through him. Today, we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. Come and see! He is risen, just as he said.
