Today’s Scripture:
Acts 6:2-4 NIV
So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, “It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. Brothers and sisters, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.”
When we live without focus, it is a perilous place. The wrong crowd can easily convince us, and we can easily be taken advantage of. In other words, lack of focus leads to defeat in our lives. Distractions can defeat us and delay us. How do we combat this? We follow the principles Jesus gave us and lived out while he was here on earth. The Bible says that for the joy set before him in our text yesterday, he endured the cross, despising its shame. Jesus focused on what was waiting for him and ahead of him. What is waiting for you on the other side of this distraction?
If we lose sight of what's important, we lose sight of our purpose and calling in life. Not all distractions are bad. But distractions cause delays and tie up other people's destinies. In our text, the disciples had a situation that needed to be resolved, and it needed attention. The situation was about the daily distribution of food to those widows who were in need. It was a good thing that needed to be resolved because, in its resolution, these widows would be properly taken care of.
I'm tired of being delayed on my journey with God, and I'm sure you are, too. We must refuse to be distracted at this time. There are so many things petitioning for our attention, but family, we must give ourselves continually to prayer and the word. God wants us to come up higher in our focus on him.
We are living a life that does not prioritize God. And if we fail to prioritize God, he will not prioritize us. Joshua said choose this day whom you will serve, but for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. He prioritizes God over everything else. May we live a life that puts God first and prioritizes him so that we can live a focused life in Christ.
