Today’s Scripture:
Nehemiah 9:31 NIV
But in your great mercy you did not put an end to them or abandon them, for you are a gracious and merciful God.
God's Mercy is a never-ending fountain. He is never out of mercy. Sometimes, we abuse God's mercy because of our sins; we continue to repeat the same sin over and over, and we feel like God could not forgive us this time... but God's
mercy is dependable... it never runs out. He has an abundance of it. The Bible says his mercies are new every morning; great is his faithfulness (Lamentations 3:23).
In this text, Israel is confessing their sins before God, and in their confession, there is a theme or a cycle where they sinned against God or do evil in the sight of God and then ask God for forgiveness, and he forgives them, and then they go back and sin again.
Can you identify with this? The cycle of sin in your life, or mine, is pretty much the same. We sin, ask for forgiveness, God forgives us, and then we sin again. The point is not to keep on sinning, but my point here is that God's mercy is available for you even if you're in sin right now and think you cannot be forgiven.
The scripture continues by saying, "You did not put an end to them or abandon them, for you are a gracious and merciful God." You see, the Israelites had left their land and carried into captivity, so in this prayer of confession, they reminisce on God's faithfulness because they lived and even returned to their land.
We must never forget that our God is faithful and he's merciful. You can't depend on something that's always running out. But God's mercy never runs out. It's an overflowing abundance of mercy.
