Today’s Scripture:
2 Kings 6:16 NIV
“Don’t be afraid,” the prophet answered. “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”
2 Kings 6:8-23 narrates the story of Elisha, the prophet, and the Aramean army. The king of Aram is at war with Israel and becomes frustrated because Elisha repeatedly reveals his battle plans to the king of Israel. This leads to the king of Aram deciding to capture Elisha.
The king of Aram is upset because God consistently reveals his secret plans to Elisha. So, the king learned that Elisha is the one showing his plans to the king of Israel. The king of Aram sends a strong force with horses and chariots to Dothan, where Elisha is staying, to capture him. They surround the city at night.
Elisha’s servant wakes up early in the morning, sees the army surrounding the city, and is terrified. He asks Elisha, “Oh no, my lord! What shall we do?” He is afraid. Here's Elisha's response...“Don't be afraid,” the prophet answered. “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”
I'm sure the servant is like, who is with us? All I see is that we are surrounded. Sometimes, we feel like Elisha’s servant; everything that we are facing becomes overwhelming, and we can’t see a way out. But, Elisha reassures his servant by revealing the reality of God's protection. Despite the overwhelming visible enemy forces, Elisha knows that God's invisible army is far greater. That's powerful! May God give us the discernment to know and to see what he sees.
Elisha’s words highlight the presence of a powerful, unseen spiritual reality. God's angelic hosts outnumber and outmatch the physical forces against them. Elisha prays for his servant’s eyes to be opened. God answers, and the servant sees the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. Elisha prays again, asking God to strike the Aramean army with blindness. God grants this. They were all blinded.
The passage demonstrates that God's protection often goes unseen but is always present. His forces are greater than any earthly power. Elisha's faith contrasts sharply with his servant's fear. Trusting in God’s unseen hand allows believers to face overwhelming circumstances with courage. Listen and be blessed.
