Today’s Scripture:
Romans 12:10 NIV
Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.
Love is such a beautiful thing. One of the things I've noticed with love is that love prefers. Love sacrifices, love gives, and love is consistent.
When we say love prefers:
We are saying that love is selfless. I have two daughters, and I love them very much. They know I love them, and they love me. However, my love for them is different from their love for me. What do I mean? My love prefers them over myself; their love prefers themselves over me. Why? Because I'm their father.
I make sacrifices for them because of my love for them. So, I would do without food because they need it, and I would do without a lavished vacation because I know they need stuff for school that the vacation money could take care of. My love prefers my children to my wants and desires. That's the kind of love that is being expressed in this text. Paul says, be devoted to one another in love, then he says, honor one another above yourselves. That's the kind of love that Jesus wants us to show each other. A love that prefers.
When we say love sacrifices:
We are saying love is giving at the expense of self. My wife is my number one priority in life. I would do anything for her because I love her. I can sacrifice for her because I am devoted to and honor her. I have sacrificed my time, energy, and life for my wife because I honor her above myself. And she's done that for me repeatedly since we've been married. It is easy to do when we understand that love sacrifices. God said to Abraham, take thy son, thine only son, and sacrifice him to me.
Abraham got ready to kill his son and sacrifice him to God, and God stopped humans and said, now I know you fear God because you have not withheld your son from me. In other words, God says, I know you love me because you were willing to sacrifice what you love for me. If we are going to love each other. We will need to learn how to sacrifice ourselves and give love to our children, our spouses, our family, and our friends. Loving each other means sacrifice.
