Today’s Scripture:
1 Chronicles 21:1 KJV
And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel.
This verse seems simple from the outset. It doesn't strike us as a big deal until we pause and consider what it truly says about our relationship with God that we can insult him by numbering what we have. Numbering what we have in the sight of our God is an indication that we lack faith in God. It says to God that you are not enough. When we number what we have, we show God that he is not able to do what he said he would do in our lives.
In our text, King David decided to count the people of Israel, an action that led to severe consequences. His decision to conduct the census reflected a reliance on human strength and resources rather than God's provision and protection. When we number what we have, we take God out. We begin to depend upon what we have instead of who God is and what he has done and can do in our lives.
By numbering the people, David reflected that it was more about the size of the army he had, his security was in the number of people he had, rather than trusting in God's miraculous power to deliver and sustain Israel. When we number what we have God becomes like any other god. We make him a liar, we make him powerless, we make him less than capable.
When we calculate what we have, we shift our focus away from God, away from faith, and we put our reliance on the visible instead of the invisible, instead of the God of the Mountains who can provide far more, exceedingly, abundantly, above that which we may ask or imagine.
His miracles cannot be calculated, they are based on faith. Today, instead of numbering what you have, trust the God who says, greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world. He is a miracle-working God. He's the everlasting God, numbers only confines him to human standards, but faith empowers him to flex his unending powers on our behalf.
