Today’s Scripture:
1 Chronicles 4:10 NIV
Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, “Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.” And God granted his request.
Not only was Jabez blessed or asked God to bless him, but he also asked God to keep him from evil and harm. In other words, he asked God to protect him. When you are blessed for more, you need God's protection, and Jabez knew this and included it in his prayer. We cannot be ignorant of the devices of the enemy. He has 3 goals, 3 assignments and 3 prayer points and they are to steal, kill, and destroy. Therefore, we cannot sit back and ask for blessings without asking for the protection that comes with the blessings. More requires protection.
Jabez did not leave this out of his request. He asked God for protection. Why? He wanted to enjoy his blessings, and he knew that the enemy would try to come against him and cause him pain. So, he says, protect me from such pain, Lord. Family, you are never going to be without trials and struggles when you are a child of the king. But God will protect you in and through them all because there's more in store for you. He doesn't bless small, small, he blessed with abundance. Thus, abundance requires protection.
This was strategic. His prayer has a chronological format that he strategically requested God's protection was no accident. I pray: May God protect you from all afflictions and from the enemy's attacks that God would prosper you and cause you no pain. Long life is God's protection; he prospers and protects us. And gives us more. May we never take for granted God's protection that leads to more. Joseph could not die in prison, he was protected for more, he could not die in the pit, he was protected for more, he could not die in Potiphar's house, he was protected for more. You too are protected for more.
David reminds us that we are protected in our going out and coming in, he reminds us that even in the valley of the shadow of death we will fear no evil, why, because our protection, the Lord is with us, God is with us, and he protects us. Surely, we are protected for more.
