Today’s Scripture:

Matthew 25:13 NIV‬

“Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.”

Our text continues with Jesus admonishing his followers and his disciples, telling them to stay ready. He says to keep watch. In other words, stay ready. He does not want them to hear, "Truly, I do not know you" (Mathew 25:12, NIV).

What a sad thing to serve God all your life and then to hear I do not know you.

Could you imagine being at the embassy and the people you've served and lived with who promised to give you access into the country, suddenly having a change of heart and saying at the time of entry, we do not know you. Then, close the door in your face, and you are left out of the promise that was given to you.

Family, Jesus made this clear to his disciples, he said, stay ready, he said to them watch. Why? Because you do not know the day or the hour. Just like in the traditional Jewish wedding, they are never sure of the exact time the bridegroom will come; they have to stay ready. Jesus is alerting us here to watch and stay ready for his return.

The apostle Peter uses some of these words in his epistle in 1 Peter 5. He says, "Be alert, and sober mind" the exact words for watch that Jesus says to his disciples. He says the devil is looking for someone to devour. In other words, stay ready; the devil is out to get you; he wants to prevent you from making it into the kingdom.

Family, Soldiers don’t look for their weapons when the bullets are flying. They are prepared—ahead of time and at all times. That's what Jesus is telling his disciples: be prepared and stay ready ahead of time and at all times. Watch, stay ready, be alert, be sober, and keep watching for his return. Likewise, we must be ready at all times. Jesus is coming back. You can't afford to be distracted right now, or at any time in your Christian journey. Paul says to Timothy, "No one in military service gets entangled in matters of everyday life; otherwise, he will not please the one who recruited him" (2 Timothy 2:4, NET).

Family, let's get it right and keep watch because we do not know the day or the hour. Jesus said to them in chapter 24, "Had the owner of the house known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have been alert, and would not have let his house be broken into" (Matthew 24:43, NET).

Stay alert, family, and stay ready; there's an unseen force trying to keep you out of the kingdom of God. Trying to make you sleep, become weary, tired, and lethargic. You must not give in to such feelings. But stand, having done all, stand in Christ. Having the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the good news, the gospel of peace, taking up the shield of faith to extinguish all the fling arrows on the enemy, take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. (Ephesians 6).

It didn't stop there. It says to pray, with every prayer and petition, pray at all times in the Spirit, and to this end, here's that word again: be alert! Stay ready, watch, and remain. Jesus is soon to return.
