Today’s Scripture:
Philippians 3:13-14 NIV
Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, [14] I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
One of the things I'm learning is that I cannot go forward if I'm looking backward. Have you ever tried to drive, and all the while you were driving, you were looking behind you? I’m not sure you would not be listening to this podcast right now. Looking backward when you're trying to go forward will always lead to death, delay, or distraction. When we are trying to make progress in our lives, and the affairs of life bombard us, it weighs us down with the things of our past. We look back and stay back. We become apathetic and lackluster in our pursuit to move forward.
God wants us to move forward, but we cannot move forward by looking backward and holding on to the things of our past. Let it go. You made a mistake; move forward. God has forgiven you; can you forgive yourself? If you don't forgive yourself, your progress will stagnate, and when that happens, things in your life never get better.
Paul says, But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead. Why does Paul say this? Is Paul not grateful for what God brought him through? That's not it. Paul knows that nothing will keep him from getting to what God has in store for him. He knew that he would not get anything done for the kingdom if he were constantly thinking and focusing on the things in his rearview mirror. If we do not press forward and look ahead, we will have accidents, unwanted delays, and stagnation that cripples our pursuits and the call that God has placed on our lives.
Paul then says I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus....in other words; Paul is saying Stop looking at your History/ See your Destiny.
Family, you've got so much ahead of you, but you won't get to it by holding on to your history, your mistakes, your shortcomings, and your inabilities; no, see your destiny by pressing forward and seeing the God of your Destiny who is with you. He calls you today to come up higher into your purpose and your destiny.
