Today’s Scripture:
Romans 5:6-8 NIV
You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. [8] But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
The atonement made us one with Christ. He did this once and for all. Jesus has made us a way by which we have been saved. He is the savior of the world. Jesus is our atonement. He came to make us one with God the Father. It's called the atonement or At-One-Ment. The Hebrew word for Atonement is Kippur, which means to repay a debt and to purify. That's important because, through Jesus's sacrifice on the cross as the Atonement, humanity was restored to Yahweh; we were united and joined together as one again.
We must always remember that we were one with God before man's fall. We disobeyed Yahweh, and we ended up needing to be restored. Restoration cannot occur until Atonement takes place. It was a sacrifice or atonement offering. The Bible says, "For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one’s life." Leviticus 17:11. Jesus's innocent and pure blood was the only blood that could bring us back into right standing with God.
One thing about the Atonement that we must understand is that the Atonement sacrifice is not just something we offer God. Jesus's death, his atonement for us, was actually a gift from God to humanity. It reflects and shows God's grace toward humanity. He made a way for us to return to him through Jesus Christ. We have been given grace and mercy. I don't know about you, but God's mercy is something that we cannot pay for; it is a result of His grace. We cannot take his grace and mercy for granted. That's what his atonement brought us: grace and mercy.
Our text says that when we were powerless, why were we powerless? We were sinners, and that could not please God. In other words, we were blemished. The Atonement or sacrifice that would forgive sins in Leviticus has to be unblemished; the unblemished sacrifice then had the power to restore and bring back into oneness. Because of our sins in the garden, we were rendered powerless. But God sent Jesus at the right time, when we were powerless, Christ had the power because he was unblemished, he was blameless, he was the man in the middle who had power to redeem us.
The Bible says, "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." The Atonement is God's demonstration of his love toward us in our sinful and weak state. Oh, how he loves you, family. Let us not take what was done for us on the cross for granted. We were given access and restoration to our father. He loves you enough to come and bring you back to him.
Today, we are made one with God because he atoned for us through Jesus Christ on the cross. We are at One with the Father forever. Thank you, Jesus, for your sacrifice on my behalf. I am restored forever.
