Today’s Scripture:
Luke 4:13 NIV
When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.
The context here is crucial: Jesus has just resisted three significant temptations. Satan tempted Jesus to turn stones into bread to satisfy His hunger after fasting for 40 days. Jesus resisted. Again, Satan offered Jesus all the kingdoms of the world in exchange for worshiping him, Jesus resisted him. Again, Satan took Jesus to the pinnacle of the temple and urged Him to throw Himself down, quoting Psalm 91:11-12 to suggest that angels would protect Him, but Jesus resisted.
All of these, demonstrate His commitment and obedience to God. The phrase "opportune time" implies that Satan, although temporarily withdrawing, would look for another chance to tempt Jesus. Family, the enemy will come again, and again, and again, he will never stop tempting us and trying to make us disobey God. He will come back at an opportune time.
Just as Satan waited for another opportunity to tempt Jesus, we should be aware that temptation is persistent in our lives. We must submit to God and his word and find ways to resist the devil and temptations. The enemy will always seek out Moments of weakness in our lives. Why? That's when we are vulnerable, Jesus was physically weak after fasting for 40 days that's when the enemy showed up because it was the Opportune Time.
Jesus' time in the wilderness shows the importance of being spiritually prepared. Just as He used Scripture to counter Satan's temptations, we too must equip ourselves with God’s word and armor. This preparation is vital for standing firm during times of spiritual attack so that we are ready for when the "opportune time" comes.
Family, temptation never takes a day off, and neither can you. Therefore, we must be spiritually ready. Standing in faith and resilience in resisting everything the enemy throws at us. Do not relent, be alert, be sober, and be vigilant.
