Charlamagne admits radio stations take Payola
We all knew this, but this confirms it. Again. If you want to get your music heard, you have to pay to play.
Anyone who tells your otherwise is full of it and using some BS legal jargon/business safeguard to save themselves.. It’s this simple:
- Radio stations have to play music to a big audience
- To play the music, they have to pay for licenses from record labels
- Record labels need radio stations to get their music heard to this big audience
- Radio stations charge record labels for play their music. “Promotion”
- Radio stations and record labels are ran by humans, humans are greedy. Money will be exchanged.
With advertisers not paying what they once did for radio ads, how else will radio stations make money? If you know anyone who is on air at your local radio station, ask them how much they make. Most of them make peanuts.
The same thing goes on with social media. You want a shoutout, you got to pay. And Spotify, you want to get on a playlist, you got to pay.
No one is going to add your music to their distribution network of thousands of people for free. If they do, you hit a lick.
If you want your music to get in front of people, you have to pay.
