The battle between fun music and lyricism has always been at the forefront of hip-hop.
Hip-hop started off as party music and then quickly developed into a voice for the voiceless.
Once the money became life-changing, labels started to dictate who would get paid and who wouldn’t.
Labels paid for fun music that was commercially viable.
Not so much for lyrical music talking about real issues.
There has been exceptions over the years, but every great rapper who has had massive commercial success, had to make universally appealing, high frequency, sing-along music for their art to get to millions of people.
With the advent of social media, you would think this has changed.
I don’t think so.
People still gravitate towards the easily digestible music more so than the food for your thoughts.
That’s what’s gets the most Reels and tikToks.
That’s what’s gets the most views on YouTube.
That’s what’s gets added to the most playlists.
And that is what gets the most streams.
