It’s the not artistic expression. They’re artists, do what you want.
It’s not the video. If they had influence on the treatment or wrote it, they’re artists. They can do what they want.
The problem is rap, specifically female rap, needs balance.
Rap isn’t just one thing.
Female rappers aren’t one thing.
Black people aren’t one thing.
We aren’t monolithic.
We are diverse and our art reflects that.
Rapsody is one of the dopest MCs out.
She’s signed to a major.
She’s gotten nominated for Grammys.
She describes the woman experience better than anyone I’ve ever heard.
Why doesn’t she get the same marketing dollars?
Lil Kim, Foxy Brown, La Chat...they all did the sex shock raps in the 90s/00s.
And it worked.
Queen Latifah and MC Lyte were giving intellectual black woman an outlet and representation in the 80s.
And it worked.
Once the money become massive from sex rap, that’s the only way major labels will put major marketing dollars behind female rappers.
Like Jay-Z said in this clip, rap is everything.
And in everything, includes the black woman who works, has a husband (or not), it’s taking care of her household (or not), is evolving as a mother (or not), is balancing a career with family responsibilities and that story has been proven it sales.
Adele sales.
Beyonce sales.
Y’all give them huge marketing dollars.
