This Is Why Record Labels Want Your Masters
Lame.
This clip pissed me off.
I wasn’t pissed at the system.
I’m not even pissed at the weak ass dude in the video.
I was pissed at how matter of factly he was speaking.
Like this shit is normal.
And ok.
Marketing someone else’s product and owning it in perpetuity without sharing the wealth with them is not ok.
Making someone pay for all of the expense to market their product while you collect all of the profits is not ok.
Keeping people in debt to you for 25 years when you’ve made $100,000,000 from a business venture that cost you $1m is not ok.
In no other realm of business would this be ok.
But in the music industry it is.
Because the music industry is fucked.
NO MORE.
No more signing over your masters.
Your masters generate so much revenue and they finance everything that these labels do.
Not just for you, but for other artists too.
Drake’s catalog is literally keeping the lights on a Universal.
Not just for him,
Or Cash Money.
Or Young Money.
For EVERYONE.
Drake deserves an equity stake in every artist’s earnings who have used revenue from his catalog to generate more revenue.
But since this is the music business, that would be preposterous.
