There’s a saying that goes, “Expectations are premeditated resentments.”
Do we tend to base our happiness on fulfilled expectations?
If left unfulfilled, are we resentful or angry?
Is there a good reason for our having the expectations we have?
You can only control yourself, so setting expectations for others and the world can result in disappointment and self-defeat.
Managing expectations is never easy, but add the stress of family vacation onto expectations and you can have a pressure cooker for meltdowns. This week the Dads share their experiences after wrapping up a vacation together. See how the ADHDads navigated the theme parks and managed groups mishaps, hunger fits, dehydration, and neurodivergent kids in the “happiest place on earth.” This is a lighthearted and fun episode where we explore our roles as dads, and we’ll have you laughing and relating to the ever complex nature of this thing we call fatherhood.
Tips for vacationing with kids with ADHD
Get excited, but within reason
Create a schedule
Prepare the kids mentally by talking about some of the plans
Create a set of rules, and stick to them
Make sure the rules align with those that you would have at home
Make sure you still make time for rest!
What makes your child happy, special, and loved? Continue to support that during vacation.
