Jargon is defined as special words or expressions that are used by a particular profession or group and are difficult for others to understand. Jargon also can be thought of as shoptalk.
Both Emunah hosts agreed that whenever believers and church leaders talk about Christ there should be a concerted effort to communicate in plain, simple English. In John 16:25, Jesus tells his disciples I have spoken these things to you in figures of speech. An hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you this way but will tell you plainly about the Father. Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father.
Our goal at Emunah is to build a community of listeners who are seeking sound Bible-based teachings and thought-provoking discussions focused on developing a life with Jesus. Jargon needs to be weeded from a lot of habits and traditions in our churches and Christian-based groups today. The podcast discusses a few favored, indecipherable terms and phrases, here are a few others that are frequently used:
Worldly used to describe anything in society that does not include God, His plans or his commandments. (1 John 2:15-17)
Salvation/Being saved refers to being saved or rescued from the consequences of sin by having our sins forgiven. The consequence of sin is death. Through forgiveness we are reconciled to God and our past sins will not be counted against us. Grace alone provides this kind of salvation and it frees us from our sinful nature with the help of the Holy Spirit. (Romans 5: 9-10)
Sin anything that goes against Gods will and His laws.
Pure heart means that you do not agree with any sinful or impure thoughts that come to mind. You deny these thoughts, erasing them so they wont affect or taint your thoughts. (Psalm 51:10; Matthew 5:8; and, Proverbs 4:23)
The old man/new man Your old man is your mindset before you accepted Christ as your Lord and Savior. It is a state of allowing your desires to rule in your life, regardless of the consequences. The new man is your mindset after conversion, a decision to allow the Holy Spirit to help you overcome sin and live in righteousness and holiness. It is the mind to serve God and His will, rather than your will. (Colossians 3: 9-10)
