What does the Bible say about profanity?
I will be sharing some
scriptures with you today that tells us why believers should avoid using profanity.
Ephesians 4:29 ESV
Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.
Colossians 3:8 ESV
But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth.
Matthew 12:36-37 ESV
I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”
James 3:10 ESV
From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.
Matthew 15:10-11 ESV
And he called the people to him and said to them, “Hear and understand: it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person.”
Ephesians 5:4 ESV
Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.

If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless.

Whoever keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps himself out of trouble.
James 3:6-8 ESV
And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell. For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
Also, reverence for the Lord should compel us to want to avoid using profanity and inappropriate words.
So with the help of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit we can control what comes out of our mouth instead allowing what comes out of our mouths to control us.
