In this heartwarming episode as we delve into the profound power of movement and storytelling in the lives of elders. I’m interviewing Laura Treglia and Shawn Womack, two passionate dance instructors, who lead the Dancing Your Stories for Elders class at the Hillside Community Center in Colorado Springs. This innovative class provides a platform for older adults to express themselves, share their treasured stories, and reminisce through creative movement.
Through a collaboration between Ormao Dance Company, Hillside Community Center, and Shawn Womack, this class has become a place of connection for the underserved older adult population in Colorado Springs. Funded by a generous grant from the Colorado Springs Health Foundation, Dancing Your Stories has not only empowered participants to express themselves through movement that has resulted in participants conducting performances across the city.
After the isolating effects of the pandemic, this class has been instrumental in helping older adults re-engage socially and forge meaningful connections with one another. It's more than just a dance class; it's a space where memories are woven into movement, where creativity is nurtured, and where community thrives.
Hear how lives have been touched and transformed by the class and discover the impact this initiative has had in fostering a sense of belonging among elders in Colorado Springs.
