Anxiety, as generally defined by most textbooks and journals nowadays, is “a normal reaction to stress and can be beneficial in some situations.” It is our emotional response that is mostly associated with a fight-or-flight reaction towards an immediate danger. In the same manner, it can help us be prepared and attentive to our surroundings while in a constant state of worry.
As anxiety stems out from our anticipation of threat, everyone suffers differently. From worrying excessively and uncontrollably about our daily events to the most extremes one could ever think of, each of us can rise above our struggles and become heroes of our own stories.
According to the American Psychiatric Association (2021), “anxiety disorders are the most common of mental disorders and affect nearly 30% of adults at some point in their lives. But anxiety disorders are treatable and a number of effective treatments are available. Treatment helps most people lead normal productive lives (Muskin, P.)”
