Chapter 11 - A Basket Full of Magic

“Oh Mama Owl, we are so glad you’ve come,” cried Abby.  “It’s wonderful to finally meet you.”

“We/ve been attacked several times by porcupine tornados.  They are trying to take our buttons,” interrupted Molly.

“We were going to ask you what to do, but then our tree crashed,” added Abby.

“The porcupine tornados are called The Quillza,” said Mama Owl.  “I have never known them to come into the forest before.”

Then Mama Owl told a story.

“Long ago, there were two magical human races - The Motch and The Mannett.  No one knows why, but there was a huge disagreement between these two races.  Over time, that disagreement turned into a fight and soon there was a great battle.  That battle ended not long ago with a fire that burned through much of the land.  Sadly, both The Motch and The Mannett perished, their homes destroyed.  Only the forest survived the fire.”

“Before the battle, The Motch hid their magic in a most unusual place - high in an old crooked oak tree near the river in a bicycle basket.”

Mama Owl turned to look at Molly and Abby, who were wide eyed and silent.

“Yes, my little friends.  Your bicycle basket is the fountain of Motch Magic,” explained Mama Owl.  “You two are the keepers of the magic.”

“We are sorry.  We didn’t know,” said Molly.

“We didn’t mean to trespass.  It was so lovely, high in the tree.  Safe and dry,” added Abby.

“You didn’t trespass.  The basket hides itself.  The magic picked you.  Otherwise you would not have found it,” explained Mama Owl.

“But what does this have to do with The Quillza?” asked Radar.

“The Quillza want the magic for themselves,” explained Mama Owl.  “They somehow learned the magic was not destroyed in the fire and was hidden in the forest.”

“Where is the bicycle basket?” asked Mama Owl.

“Hidden in the bushes down by the waterfall,” answered Molly.

“It will be safe there,” said Mama Owl.

“The waterfall and the buttons have matching twin rainbows,” said Abby.

“Do they now?” asked Mama Owl.  “That would make sense.  It’s the same magic.”
