Chapter 14 - Freeing Abby
“Let’s sneak further away while they’re fighting,” said Molly. “They took Abby to Gruff, the leader of The Quillza.”
“Under The Champlain Bridge, a bridge that crosses the river and the ridge built by the Mannett long before the fire,” said Radar. “It seems to be their main headquarters.”
Molly and Radar met the others of the bee patrol.
It wasn’t hard to find Abby. The Quillza were fighting over her. Gruff and Scar were guarding her.
“Oh she looks so scared,” whispered Molly, distressed.
“Look,” whispered Radar, pointing across the field. “Spunky is coming.”
“Oh no! Stop him Radar,” said Molly. “We don’t want him to get caught.”
A few minutes later, Spunky was giving Molly a very slobbery kiss, as quietly as possible.
“We need a distraction so Spunky and I can rescue Abby,” said Molly. “She is terribly frightened.”
Just then, the two Quillza who were guarding Molly, swooshed under the bridge.
“The slippery little rat used her magic to get away,” lied the guards. “We think she went up the ridge.”
“You useless rodents,” yelled Gruff. “Whoever catches her can keep her.”
All of The Quillza swooshed away. Even the two guards who knew it was a lie.
“Only Gruff stayed behind. Now’s our chance,” whispered Radar. “Spunky and Molly, swing around behind Abby. When you get close, we will attack Gruff. When he is distracted, get Abby. Meet us back at the flat rock ledge.
“What about you?” asked Spunky. “Not safe.”
“Go. Save Abby. There is no time to argue,” insisted Radar.
Spunky with Molly on his back, stalked silently under the bridge.
Gruff tried to take Abby’s button but could not remove it.
“You cannot steal magic,” Abby sobbed. “Leave me alone.”
“You will give it to me when they return with your silly little sister,” argued Gruff.
“Hey you! Ugly,” called a voice.
Gruff looked around but didn’t see anyone.
“Yes you. Ugly little porcupine,” called Radar.
“Go away. She is mine,” Gruff said to no one.
Gruff got stung from behind.
Gruff spun around, “Who did that?”
“Are you scared ugly?” teased Radar.
Gruff got stung again.
“What’s the matter ugly?” asked Radar. Then all of the bee patrol attacked, stinging constantly from every direction.
Gruff ducked, covering his face. But the stinging continued.
