Chapter 16 - A Surprise
“Will they all drown?” Spunky asked, disheartened.
“No, Mama Bear is expecting them down at her end of the ridge. She will let them climb up the ridge. All this time the beavers and many of the forest animals have been busy, building and reinforcing a dam, keeping the water back, until all was set,” explained Mama Owl. “Galen has been watching and reporting in. We heard when you met Billy, when you met Mama Bear and when you found Moon. When Shine arrived, we knew it would soon be time to release the flood.”
Mama Owl and Spunky rested quietly, watching the water rush by. It didn’t take long to start to slow down, it was one huge wave that was released, and was now almost passed.
“I will meet you back at the team headquarters, I want to chat with Mama Bear,” said Mama Owl.
As soon as Mama Owl flew off, Spunky jumped into the river, rinsed off his camouflage, and swam with the current. Moments later, he was back at the tripwire headquarters. He leapt up to the den entrance.
Billy and Clarissa were resting and chatting with Radar, and Shine was resting quietly beside Moon who remained asleep from his Quillza attack.
“Spunkster, welcome back,” said Shine. “Can you get in?”
“Yep,” said Spunky, pushing aside enough rocks to enter into the den.
“We have to find Molls and Abbs,” said Spunky.
“They are with Mama Bear, aren’t they?” asked Clarissa.
“Not anymore,” called Abby, walking into the cave followed closely by five energetic fluff balls, Molly following closely behind.
“Oh puppies,” called Clarissa. “My oh my! They are adorable bundles of energy.”
“Abbs, Molls!” called Spunky picking them both up for a snuggle hug. He carried them down to the river to rinse away their camouflage. He was so excited, “New friends, old friends. Let’s boing! So fun, so fun!”
“We’ll join in as soon as Montgomery wakes,” called Shine.
As if on cue, Moon poked his head beside Shine and said, “Boing? Time to teach the puppers.”
Shine and Moon and five active balls of puppy fluff playfully tumbled down to the river, laughing and giggling and boinging. The puppies splashed in the water and explored along shore, but stayed close to Shine.
Molly and Abby were the first to stop and rest at the base of the ridge. “It’s been a long few days, hey Molly?” asked Abby.
“For sure, for sure!” answered Molly.
“You’re starting to sound like Spunky!” laughed Abby.
